Yves Saint Laurent Crystal Shoes

As one of the most famous designers in the world, Yves Saint Laurent is a name known for its heritage, elegance, and stature. Yves Saint Laurent, or YSL, is one of the most prominent and influential French couture houses in the history of fashion.  The name has immense international clout and is renowned as one of the innovative and highly sought high-end fashion designs in the world.

The story of Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent began with a design contest created by the International Wool Secretariat--in which he placed third--and was lead to Paris. In Paris, Mr. Laurent met Michel de Brunhoff, the editor-in-chief of Vogue at that time. De Brunhoff, who saw great potential in Mr. Laurent’s design sketches, advised him to consider becoming a fashion designer. At the age of 17, Mr. Laurent left his birth place in Oran, Algeria and returned to Paris, France to study haute couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture--where he later graduated as one of their best pupils.

Aimed with his training, Mr.Laurent reentered the International Wool Secretariat against his fellow (and presently famous) designers Karl Lagerfeld and Fernando Sanchez. This time Mr. Laurent successfully won the competition and went to work for Christian Dior. After some time Mr. Laurent gained greater responsibility in the Dior fashion house. In 1957, Dior met with Mr. Laurent’s mother to inform her that he had chosen her son to succeed him. A year later, Dior died and Mr. Laurent’s found himself running the house at the age of 21. In that year, his first Spring collection in the as the head of Dior was met with great admiration. However, his next collection failed miserably.

Afterwards, Mr. Laurent was conscripted to serve in the French Army for the Algerian War of Independence. He served only 20 days before being hospitalized from military hazing. The Dior fashion house had fired Mr. Laurent during this time, which lead him to more hospitalization.

After his hospital release in 1960, Mr. Laurent sued Dior and won. He then proceeded to create his own fashion house. The house of Yves Saint Laurent created some of the most iconic fashion trends including thigh-high boots and Le Smoking--the tuxedo jacket. Since then, the YSL brand has gained world recognition for excellence in design and innovation. Famous fans of the brand include Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Heidi Klum,  Christina Aguilera, Eve, Gwen Steffani, and Zoe Saldana.
